What Class is My Car?

We have kind of been joking about what class my car properly belongs in, but I really do need to figure it out for this season. I have the SCCA rule book but I'm still not sure.

My car is a 1988 Porsche 911 coupe. 3.2L engine, 5spd. Stock suspension, brakes, and everything else except these mods: sway bar in the front, spacers in the rear. I'm running Michelin Pilot Sports Front 205/55R16, Rear 225/50R16.

Last season I studied up & figured I was BS. Sure enough when I came out to drive, I was classed as BS. Were yall just joking about my "mods"? Is BS what I should be?

TECHNICALLY, the wheel spacers and strut bar put you in Street Prepared since there is no STX2 class (displacement takes you out of STS and STS2) ... so, your actual legal classification would be BSP. However, I don't think any local guys would complain about those minor mods in BS ... well, unless you win.

The front sway bar change is legal in stock.
Spacers are legal for stock as long as the spacers do not change the stock wheel offset by more than 1/4 inch.
Tire size is free as long as the wheels are the stock size (dia. and width) and within the offsets mentioned above. That's why I put 285/30s on a 8" wheel.

It's not a sway bar Mike ... it's a strut bar/brace. Some cars come with them, but adding one is not BS legal from my understanding. And you are right about the spacer, but I believe hers is more than 1/4".

I'm not sure how to tell about the spacers & how wide the rear wheels are set unless I get somebody who knows what they're looking at to look at it, or help me take apart & show me. I do have a friend coming over to help me do rear brakes sometime soon, so will have the rear wheels off for that. I know the PO of this car told me that there are x-long lugnuts on the rear wheels due to the spacers, and I think he said that it was widened about 1" but honestly I'm not sure if he meant per wheel or what? Sorry, big DOH on the whole thing from me.

While this is all good to know if you wanted to enter a national or regional event, no one locally will really care. I say don't worry yourself about it. Stay in BS and have fun.

I know you are all nice people but why should anyone want to run out of class unless you are bumping up? I run BSP once in a while but if the Z was a BSP car I wouldn't run BS. Doesn't seem right.

I care. I want to run in the correct class for my car, period. If BSP is the correct class, that's where I'll be this season. However I am still not sure, based on the above discussion. And I'm not sure how to get sure. One thing I clearly need do is to learn more about my car and the specific details of how it is set up. That would be a good start! Maybe yall can help me with this at the test & tune day in Feb?

There was some dispute about this at the first event I ran, where I was classed BSP initially, then changed to BS. I guess, when it comes to event time, the decision is made on the ground at registration and tech?

For real, I appreciate the help, and the "just come have fun" spirit - but say for example I go to do something at TVR or some other region for events, I don't want to look like an idiot (which some may wonder about once I get out on course ) - I would rather know the "right" class for my car (assuming there is one right class) than to show up out of region all deer-in-headlights saying "well this is where they let me run back home!" Ya know?

Running in a higher class isn't necessarily a bad thing. I have faith Kathy will continue to improve and get faster no matter the class.

I see this scenario played out at registration and tech at divisional and national events: "but, I run in class XYZ at home?! Why are you putting me in with that class?" and I wonder how it happens. now I know. It's true no one around here would complain until they got beat but why start out in the wrong class. The car is prepped for BSP. Run in BSP, you won't regret it.

Yeah you're right. Hmm. I seem to recall that Registration put me in BSP (Evan) and then somebody ELSE told me I should have been in BS. Somebody whose initials are RR....
