I recently got a very minimal racing sim setup at the house ... Logitech Momo Race wheel and my gaming PC. I purchased a title called Live For Speed specifically for it's course building capabilities. It includes 2 flat, unobstructed lots for auto-x use. It also scores you including cone penalties (though not exactly like SCCA penalties).
I've built 2 auto-x courses so far and I think it's helping with skill building. I'm learning the differences between the drivetrain layouts and really learning more about proper lines through gates. I think this is about as close to auto-x seat time without an empty lot of your own ...
Here are some screens of my courses ...

I know I'm a little cone happy with the designs, but visibility is different with a sim ... there is no peripheral vision and it's hard to see ahead as the cones are taller than real life. So, the extra cones help direct the driver on the course.
