There is a natural progression with any hobby, yes I said hobby I don't consider autocross a sport. Most don't do this but many do.
You show up at your first event with your DD and have a blast. You really don't understand what all is going on but man is it fun. You take note of the weirdos changing tires in the parking lot, They actually have two sets of wheels for one car! They have jacks and little trailers to carry them. They aren't that much faster than you, obviously have tons of cash, they need to get a life...
A year or so later while you are unhooking your little trailer and changing your tires you notice those guys that are pulling the cars behind a truck on a trailer. They unload the car, set up a canopy, and drink coffee all morning. They aren't that much faster than you, obviously have tons of cash, they need to get a life...
A few years latter while you are backing your car off of your trailer you notice some guy pull up in a motor home, unload two set of tires with stickers on them, back his car out of an inclosed trailer, jack it up and put fresh tires on for a local event. They aren't that much faster than you, obviously have tons of cash, they need to get a life...
Not everyone does this or should but I have watched the above happen so many times it's not funny. It doesn't take it to win especially on the local level but a hobby is a hobby and people are going to spend what they want/can to enjoy it.
I used think it was stupid to spend $25k on a bass boat, $50k rebuilding an old car only to never drive it, buy an RV just to go to watch NASCAR races, $5k on golf clubs... Ok, golf is still stupid but I'm sure you get my point.
I loved the people that spent that much on bicycles. Especially when I was the one selling them the parts. Now I don't care as much. The way I see it as long as the bills are paid and you got some in savings do what you want. Who am I to tell you otherwise?

Hilarious, and so true! I'm strongly resisting the "progression." One reason I'm driving to Dixie Tour on the Hankooks I'll run in Road Tire class. (Praying I don't run over a piece of metal and ruin one on the way down.) I might some-day allow myself a little tow-behind trailer, however. But that's it! No more!
