Judging from what I have read in the Miata community, contingency money is nice to have but there are not many top drivers who would choose what they felt to be an inferior tire just for the contingency.

Matt, the Kumho XS and the RS3 are the top two choices in terms of handling heat. I have found the XS to be inferior to the Star Spec and the RS3 on the Miata, and this experience is common. The XS does seem to perform better on heavier cars though.

That is indeed what I meant. There's a reason hoosiers are the most used r-comp and not the kumho's or hankooks, and it's all in the $$$.

Let's be honest, people go to nationals to win, and to win money/tires. If they are serious competitors, that is part of their tire choice.

wtfever I go with what's cheapest, who cares what's fast, this is local competition, as long as I can have fun and it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Then you ought to go dumpster diving with Nick for your "race" tires

I remember Zach always coming over and using my sprayer on the XS's cause they were too hot, but I also sprayed the star specs and it helped as well. I guess that relates to the tires getting hotter on the fwd cars though.

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you.

Didn't really have anything to do with FWD. On hot days I got benefits from spraying both the XS and the Star Specs on the Miata.

Never sprayed my XS. Never tried though. they always gained grip on the second run and never lost it, so I left them be.

Clearly coming from someone who's never dumpster dived for tires.

Also, there are no dumpsters to go through. It's like a grabfest really, as all the tires are just in huge stacks. It's like they're all placed there, easy for you to get to...except they aren't organized. BUT IT'S FREAKING FREE TIRES! Fine to play on...not so good for going fast...

Matthew Braun used 6 sets of new Hoosiers to win SS in Lincoln. Do you really think he bought 6 sets of tires to win 1? It was all about competition and he knew there wasn't a chance without Hoosiers. Not to mention Yokohama actually had the "best" street tire contingency last year and I didn't see one entry with a Yokohama contingency.
