  • Solo Car Classing

So I'm a little unsure still about my car's classing. At the TNT I was classed "DSP" but I got reading into the rules to clarify some of my concerns and I think I was classed too low.

See, I haven't done much to my car, however one big thing that I think would put me at least in SM is the fact that I've removed basically all of my interior. I have door panels, a dash, and center console still. But all my carpet, rear trim pieces, headliner, and the rubbery tar-like sound deadening has been dry-iced as well. As far as I can tell, any car in an SP class is supposed to still have all of it's interior correct?

I'm still a Novice, and it wasn't like I was much of any competition to Casey in his BMW lol, and I'm content with staying in DSP for this season, but I just want to be honest and don't want to run into any issues further along. I won't be competing in anything on a national level, as I intend to only run in the regional stuff around here.

tl;dr - I don't have any interior in my car, so does that put me in SM?

Once you take out the door panels you are bumped out of SM and into mod classes I believe.

Strictly speaking to the National Level rules:

        1. You would be bumped out of DSP because you took the Back seat out (along with the other interior, but let's just go one step at a time)
        2. You would be bumped out of SM because you took the carpet out.

I know from talking to you at the TnT that you are really having a good time with autoX and getting to know everyone. You will be running in our Novice class this year, and there is a chance to win Rookie of the Year in the Novice class. Because you are running Novice class, there is not really a reason to look at the people running in the classes you would possibly be classed in because you are not competing against them.
At this point you are picking a class to be PAX'd against the other competitors in Novice.
At this point you are looking at a Prepared class. We really need to get your modifications (if any, to the engine, ECU, etc as well as suspension) to properly classify you.

I know this is very confusing, and very frustrating, but it is part of the fun (atleast that is what i keep telling myself).

Oh I don't find it frustrating, I just want to be sure I'm where I'm supposed to be haha.

Alright, for a more detailed listing to all the modifications they are as follows:

          Body/Interior:

The body is totally stock, minus the upcoming sunroof delete, but that won't change any lines or anything (duh)

Door panels remain, dash is unmodified, and center console remains in tact. All other interior panels have been removed including: rear seats and safety belts, all trim pieces and panels, headliner, carpet, and factory sound deadening. Also the trunk has been stripped to the bare metal including removal of factory tire tools and spare tire.

          Suspension:

-Aftermarket coil-overs (damper adjustable, and included camber plates)
          -Front strut bar

          Brakes:

          -Ceramic pads
          -Stainless steel lines

          Engine/Drivetrain:

-Full exhaust including removal of all emissions (catalytic converters, and EGR delete)
-Short ram intake, with a ram-air type setup (duct from available hole in bumper routed to the filter)
          -Advanced timing
          -Welded rear differential
-All other components remain in their factory configuration

          Electrical:

-A few components of the factory sound system have been removed (speakers, amps)
-All other components remain in their factory configuration

These are all the modifications to this car. When I purchased the car it was entirely stock, so I know these are all that have been done. Going over it like that, I'm fairly sure I should be in a prepared class yeah? Anything I've left uncovered or is unclear feel free to ask as I just want my classing to be accurate. Thanks for the help guys.

I'm the one that put you in DSP. I knew it wasn't legal at the time due to the interior but didn't want you to run with no competition. The N thing kinda threw me off as I asked Casey about DSP not considering the N designation.

But yeah, it's technically a Prepared car. But, to be fair ... I know a couple of other Bimmers with no door panels that aren't in Prepared and no one is complaining ... till they win ...

You really shouldn't run NDSP becasue it's an advantage over the other novices. But, running in Prepared isn't going to be easy in a PAX class. We have a few people that run in the incorrect class and no one cares locally, but it's all agreed upon by everyone in the class. Can't really do that with Novices as the class isn't very static.

To be legal, run your Prepared class. To have fun, maybe try to talk to your fellow Novices and see if they would be willing to compromise for SM or something. That's really up to them and how much you care.

Or ... find some door cards.

There are several Prepared classes, just like there are several Stock and Street Prepared classes. Look in the rule book in the Prepared section and see where your car falls. I'd offer, but I'm honestly clueless on the prepared classes.

EDIT :: Based on my very limited knowledge, I'd guess CP ... simply based on the other 6-cylinder RWD car that runs around here in CP.

Okay, there are two classes you can run in Prepared.

XP which is the catch all class for Prepared
                  or you can run
FP (you have an S13 chassis right)

So take that and then look here for your PAX

Or you could run in the Modified class and you will be running in:

DM if you have a 2000CC engine or under or
EM for all other Production and GT cars

Once again its your choice to pick a class and know the rules for that class, so pick away.

I'm S14, but I'm sure it's the same for both as they're hugely similar cars. I appreciate all the help and insight guys. I'll dig a little more and make the determination accordingly. I'm sure it's a prepared car if I'm just totally honest and play by the rules exactly, which was my original intent for bringing this up.

Forgive my ignorance once more, but I can't seem to find the section within the Prepared section I would find information regarding different Prepared classes.

go to Appendix A and then you have a list of all the classes and the cars in those classes. With Prepared its fairly straight forward except for XP (which is a class where any car can have any engine) and with Modified it can be a little more confusing.

                            Nick,

There are two sections of the rule book you'll need to read. The first details what you're allowed to do in each of the classes. There are later sections that detail which cars fall into the various classes/subclasses. For Prepared, start looking on page 189 of the 2011 rule book and I think you'll eventually find what you're looking for.
