  • So where does a Caterham fit in?

Since my Caterham is finally on the road (after two years), I am thinking of bringing it out to play. I have read the rules, and looked and looked but the word Caterham does not appear anywhere. So where do I fit in? My Caterham is a 1978 running a 1558cc Lotus Twin Cam motor, Panasport 13 inch wheels with economy street tires, the stock Caterham roll bar... Basically a stock Caterham from 1978.

From the rule book I see a Lotus 7 could run in C Stock or ASP, but I am not really a Lotus. So that leaves XP (but the car only weighs about 1200 lbs so do I want to add the extra weight?) or D/E Mod. I am thinking it would be D Mod but then do I meet all the rules?

So what do you guys think? I know it doesn't matter this early, but I like to follow rules.

Is there a someone who will "pre-tech" the car for me? I really would hate to have to try and build a roll cage or find arm restraints at 8AM Sunday morning.

Finally what are the apporved Db levels. My car can be a touch noisy so I would like to know where I stand on that one also. Is it 95Db at 100 feet or ....

Oh and I may may want a narrow short person for an instructor...

I think D-mod or E-mod. I'm pretty sure the engine size makes a difference.

I don't know if she can teach or not but she will out run you in your own car.

ummm, how many Caterham vehicles are made per year. I think that is the reason you are not specifically seeing Caterham in the rule book. There is a minimum number that a manufacturer must meet, hence the reason you don't see more "kit cars" being run.

I didn't look myself, but I know there is a section in there about where to place a car that is a low production, kit, or one-off car. Basically we can put you in the catch all group at a local event, but that would be left up to Matt, John, and Darryl to figure out.

Yes they make less than 1000 cars per year, which is what the cut off is for production. But there are also many cars listed that they made less than 1000. I think the listing may go back to Lotus 7's have always been considered to fast to race by the SCCA. That fact doesn't take into account the driver (which in this case is not that fast).

Most of my 7 buddies claim D-mod is the place we end up so I will reread that section a see if I can get my car to comply. If anyone I am running as novice so I should cause a problem with anyone.

And Aufxy, if you fit (if you are who I think you are you will fit) and we are there you can ride. They say you would be faster than me so I must be able to learn something.

I am extremely jealous right now. I've wanted to build a 7 replica ever since I first saw one. Maybe I can make it to the race this weekend in the GTI.

The last 7 clones we had run were classed as E&Dmod cars .This would be a safe bet.

One was a rotary powered car and the other was a supercharged Buick V6.

What the heck was I saying?

But with displacement at 1558 D-mod looks right. Car 1200lbs, driver 145, weight is good also.

Was the V6 car possibly a Stalker? I had one of those, what a stinking fast car in the right hands esp the 3.8 supercharged.

Yes Richard Price had the super stalker. He still has it as far as I know . I hope to see him in the future. He got off in a track day HPDE type phase with the car so I am not sure where he is now but he or the car is sure to pop up sooner or later.
