  • Eclipse prob., random misfire, need answers.

Ok well, Matt's prob. got me thinking about my wife's eclipse's problem we've been having since two months ago. She has a 03' eclipse gt, 3.0L v6 SOHC automatic trans. and what it is doing is happening only after it rains. It will start up fine, then all of a sudden start chugging and rpms range from almost none to idle. We let it sit for about 15-30 min. and then started it up (even though it didn't want to at first), and let it idle for about 10min. and then it drove fine. Due to happening right after rain, I figured water was somehow getting into the gas tank. We replaced the gas cap and put water remover in the fuel tank. The only engine codes showing up are "camshaft position sensor", "crankshaft position sensor", and "random misfire". C said to check the cam sensor, which wasn't clear so we replaced the distributor(which has the cam sensor in it), and checked the crank sensor and its working fine. While its still doin this after it rains, we have noticed that now when you get on the gas, the engine pop's the random misfire code about 3,000 rpms and misfires like crazy. I know if it were the spark plugs it would be telling me which cylinder was misfiring, but I don't know what to think about this and the other forums list this problem, but no one has a solution. Any info would be nice. Thanks

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you.

Coil on plug coils? Check for moisture around the plugs, even without a error code that points to one of the coil packs I would check there first.

It doesn't have coil packs, it just has wires from the distributor to the plugs.

What part of town are you in? If you wanted to try to meet up, I could log the ECU to see what it's actually doing to get you some more info. That could tell you if it's a mechanical issue at the plug/dist or a signal issue going to the ECU.

I would still check everything around the firing for moisture, if it ever rains again...

Yeah, it does sound like a moisture issue. It could be like Darryl says ... somewhere in the bay around the sparky stuff, or sometimes water can wick itself in to bad places via the cloth wrap around wiring harnesses.

... and I would have known that if I'd paid attention, huh? And I knew that too ... lol.

Since you've already replaced the distributor I would like to rule out moisture in the distributor cap because I'm assuming it's new as well. If not, replace it. It is probably letting moisture in. My next guess would be that the plug wires are arcing externally. This is a problem that can be exaggerated by moisture. Check for white specks on the plug wires. If you find any, they are definitely arcing and need to be replaced. Even if you can't find any traces the wires are a likely culprit. Hope this helps.

K well, the plan is to replace the plugs, wires, and valve cover gasket and tube seals. I had this planned, but read in the other forums that this hasn't fixed it. Hopefully it'll work, and I'm not sure where u live Matt, but maybe we can figure something out. If not, I'll bring it to the event the 25th. The only thing is that we prob. won't have the money to do the plugs, wires, gaskets, etc until after the event. THANKS EVERYONE for the input! Jer

moisture making a differance indicates that your secondary ignition (wires ,plug wires ,coil wire ) is the issue .It can also be large spark plug gaps and then the moisture is the last straw on the camels back .This is the only thing I can see it being .

mine started doing that a while back, Jer. i changed the plugs, and the gap had opened up to .41...my gapping is supposed to be between .28 and .31. maybe its something simple like that. I do, however, have the COP setup....so it still could be the ignition stuff...
