Forum will no longer be utilized!

After facing many challenges with utilization of this forum for many years, the board voted on the evening of 1/12/2026 to stop use of the forum in favor of the modern, more effective means.

Most of our general club organization will now be coordinated via Discord and results from our events along with schedules and announcements will be hosted on our main alscca.net webpage.

What does this mean for the old forum? Well, in short we are going to stop using it. This has been reviewed several times in the past few years, and there has been a desire for some of more tenured members of the club to have the historic content preserved. In an effort to preserve this content, it was discovered that we could not simply export the content to be placed in a modern website. This forum will now become an archive only forum and will not be monitored. If you wish to preserve any of the content, this is your time to search the pages to find it. There is no promise that this content will remain available forever with the fragile nature of this forum.

Hey guys, my 12 year old daughter is interested in competitive driving, are there many AL SCCA karting solo events? If not in Alabama some events not too far away? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

    edited to clarify:

Would we need a dedicated "race" cart/kart or if she shows up with a normal go-cart and protective gear could she run?

She could run with us at our next SOLO. May 23 at Birmingham Race Course. We've had several cart drivers in the past. Anything from a shifter cart to a yard cart is welcome. A helmet and cart safety equipment would be needed. I believe the class would be Formula Junior?

You also have to have a licensed Youth Steward on site. There are a total of 4 classes in Formula Jr. There are some engine restrictions. A 12 year old would not be allowed to run a shifter. The rules are in the Solo rule book.

There is a sprint track in Decatur. Bakers Creek Kart Club

Not that I'm a snob but there's a kart dirt track within 10 miles of us... I'd rather her be around SCCA type events and people, not wannabe NASCAR types (not that there's a problem with that....)

Kart safety gear being the equipment outlined for Formula Jr? I'll have to do some research and see how motivated she really is to cut grass to afford gear

Safety gear basically amounts to covering all the exposed skin, a neck brace, and an approved helmet.

Shelton ran a dirt race at Thanksgiving Thunder or something like that at a track north east of Atlanta. It really is quite entertaining. He was racing with an experienced karter. Racing on the dirt is all about tire prep.

There's also a small kart track in Barnesville, GA. GSKA

Matt Ragan used to run with jeans and a hoody when he ran the cart.

There's no need for fancy racing suits and what nots. Just get her some decent boots that cover her ankles, a breathable long sleeved shift, and some kind of gloves and she should be alright.

In all honesty, unless she did something really really stupid, I doubt anyone would say anything. Also remember that karts are always out on course alone (or with other carts) at solo events, so there's even less to worry about from the safety aspect.

Like Charles said we would need a "licensed Youth Steward" on site and I don't think any of our stewards have that on the license. Some one correct me if I'm wrong.

There are also different safety rules when it comes to course layout for karts, so it would be good to know if someone is coming before hand so the course can be designed accordingly.

Thanks for taking the time to post and at least give the idea consideration. I'm going to see how hard she's willing to work to make this idea a reality.

One last question, are karts able to run rallyx? I didn't see any provisions in the rules so I'm operating with the "if it's not in the rules, it's not allowed," concept.

Definitely no on the karts in rallycross.

I am a licensed youth steward ,however I am 99% sure I wont be at the next solo since it is the day after the time trial at RoadAtlanta .I also have a kart I am interested in selling in a big way since Matt is graduated to cars .I would also be more than willing to donate the neck brace, and his old kart suit. He grew out of it very quickly . I think he wore it twice .

BTW,the youth steward license is very uncomplicated to get .The application is on the SCCA.com site under solo forms I believe,so it would make sense for chairs and safety stewards to send in an app. I became one back when Matt was karting because I knew if he was karting then I was there so that requirement was always met.

Last question.... since MOMMA might not want to initially spring for a "real" kart, we can run a yard kart providing she has proper safety equipment and the kart passes tech? I looked through the rules and other than not being a shift kart and everything being safety wired there's not a whole lot of changes for her just to have fun.... am I correct in my guess?

                            Thanks guys,

Take into consideration the length of the course, if the yard kart has trouble pushing 20mph that can make for some long runs.

                              Should still be fun though.
