    Updated 4-8-2023

A Trek is a non-competitive, non-speed driving event intended to foster social interaction among the participants. Participants follow a pre-determined route using a “convoy style – follow the car ahead of you” format. The lead car in the convoy is driven by a person who knows the pre-determined route. This is typically the event’s Chairperson. Depending on the number of cars involved, there may be multiple groups of lead/follow. Each car will have turn-by-turn instructions and our final destination to use if we get separated. A sweep car will run in the last position.
The event will begin in the parking lot of the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum and end at the Mustang Museum in Odenville. Registration at 8:00a followed by a driver’s safety meeting and the first group of cars will leave at 9:00a. Come with a full tank of gas or a full charge and eat breakfast beforehand as desired.
The route is approximately 61 miles long and will take about 2.25 hours to complete, with a quick rest stop about 1/3 of the way into the Trek.
At the end of the Trek, we will have an optional tour of the Mustang Museum with a reduced entry fee of $10per adult.
Following that tour we will have an optional lunch at Charlie’s BBQ in Odenville, ordering off the menu and sitting on the outdoor enclosed porch. We should be finished with the Trek, tour and lunch at approximately 1:45p. Odenville is 11 miles (18 min) from I-20 Exit 144 in Leeds.
    The Participants
Each car must have at least two people in it, a driver and a navigator although there should not be much navigating required. More than two participants per car are allowed. Children and minors are allowed. Motorcycles are not allowed.
At least one of the participants in the car must be a member of SCCA; weekend memberships will be available. When you register, one of the occupants will either give their SCCA membership number or ask for a weekend membership - $10.
All participants must have either an SCCA Annual Waiver or sign an SCCA release of liability waiver. Minor waiver, under 19 years old in Alabama, must be accomplished ahead of the event (more on that later).
Registration and payments will be via the Motorsport Reg website. Sequential car numbers will be assigned. Both driver and navigator need to be under one registration. One mobile phone number, that will be in the car, must be provided at registration. You will have your “leader’s” mobile number.

    Safety
All drivers must have a valid driver’s license.
All automobiles participating must have a current registration and minimum insurance as required by Alabama law.
Driver’s/owner’s are responsible for the safe condition of their cars.
Posted speed limits should not be exceeded.
No intoxicating substances can be consumed before or during the event.
    Registration
A motorsports reg account is free and is used for event registration for ALSCCA as well as many other car club events. Establish your personal account at https://www.motorsportreg.com. The Trek entry fee is $20 per car for SCCA members and $30 per car for non-members to purchase one weekend membership. Motorsportsreg has recently added an additional $2 registration fee of their own, so expect that small difference in the total.
    Waivers
Waivers are covered in a separate email. MSR Speed waivers are not available for this event.
    Equipment Required
None. ALSCCA is planning to run competitive rallies in the future and we suggest you wait until after our rally school to purchase any specialized rally apps or tools such as GPS calculators, digital odometers, etc. However, a clipboard and a pencil would be useful to hold the route instructions. Also on this Trek, optional training on how to accomplish an odometer factor calculation will be the first leg. This is also used in other rally formats. Suggest you use the calculator on your phone for that. NOTE: If you are going to participate in the optional Richta Rally app training, we suggest you have a holder and a power cord for your phone or device. Using the GPS mode associated with the app will produce a moderate power drain. The phone used to follow the Richata - Competitor App should not be a phone you use for any other function. The Registrar needs to know the phone number you would communicate on if necessary.
    Optional Training for the Future
Optional training on Odometer Correction and the use of Richta Rally – Competitor App are covered in a separate email.
Glossary (mostly concerning Route Instructions (RI’s))
NOTE: Carefully read and comprehend the definitions of object and signs (not a big deal for a Trek, but crucial for a Rally)

Bear – Turn in the indicated direction 10° to 80°
CAST – Change, continue, or commence average speed to
CP- Check point – unlike “old school” SCCA Checkpoints, no sign or teams required. Running a GPS based rally does not require you to stop at a checkpoint unless told to stop and given a start time. We will not stop at checkpoints on this Trek.
CZT – Car Zero Time is a specific clock time that can be used throughout a rally. It is the time off for the first car at the beginning and then can be used to restart the rally after pauses or free zones with no checkpoint timing. Your start time would be CZT plus your car number. For this Trek, follow your leader.
Flying Start/Restart – A checkpoint that indicates the beginning of a Timed Portion of the rally.
Left or L – Turn to the left of 20° to 169°
Right or R- Turn to the right of 20° to 169°
Objects – Material in route instructions not enclosed in quotes refer to an actual object or place or likeness thereof. The object or place may be identified by a suitable sign.
Signs – All Route Instructions enclosed in quotes (“) refer to text or symbols on signs. Signs may be referenced in full or part. Where a route instruction references any sign in less than its entirety, such a reference shall include a prominent portion of the sign.
Straight – Proceed within plus or minus 10° of directly ahead at an intersection.
Stop – An official octagonal stop sign, at which the rally vehicle is required to stop.
TATime Allowance (read explanation of use in Richta app instructions)
Transit Zone/Free Zone- A portion of a rally route in which there are no timing controls.
    Next Steps
    1. If you have a minor coming with you, complete the waiver form.
    2. Recommend that participants simply download the Richta Compeitor app before the event on the phone that will be dedicated for that use. Passwords and instructions to log in to the event will be provided at registration.
    3. Familiarize yourself with the General Instructions and the Optional Training.
    4. The morning of the rally, registration opens at 8:00. We will check you in, confirm your waiver and give you a nametag and small number card for your rear window. Do not open the Richta Competitor App until you are in the Barber Museum parking lot. We will give you the password for the Trek and your car number so you can set up the app for this Trek. We will have a hotspot available. There will be a short safety meeting. If you have questions, try to make them yes/no questions. The car groups will start departing at 9:00, then every five minutes apart. There is a five-minute stop at the odometer check and a 10-minute snack/restroom break at approx 20 miles, 44 minutes into the Trek.
    5. Route instructions will be distributed at the safety briefing. For a competitive rally, teams usually get their instructions 15 minutes before their departure time. In our rally school, we will discuss how to maximize those few minutes before you drive into “The Twilight Zone.”

The event registration states that no motorcycles are allowed. I'm considering renting a Polaris Slingshot (side-by-side seating) for this event. Is that allowed?

          t-ray,
Let me check that out and get back to you.
I know AL classifies them as autocycles, no helmet or motorcycle cert required, but they register them as motorcycles.

            t-ray,
Our liability insurance carrier classifies them as a motorcycle, so they are not eligible.
The Trek is full. When you first asked, we had a cancellation, but it was immediately taken. We have a wait list with no one on it currently. I recommend you register, so you can be #1 for any more cancellations. If no one cancels, you will not be charged.

Ok thank you for checking. Fortunately I am already registered, using my daily driver (Ford Focus ST). This saves me the cost of renting one. Thanks again.

Oh, that does make me wonder - do these same insurance restrictions apply to autox? Or is that completely different?
