Sorry everyone..I've been slammed...I'll jump in with my option. Correct your going to hate not having LSD. I wouldn't weld because it suck on dirt, just ask Miles & Leon. I would swap out transaxle with a later Type4 or 914. Another option that worked for me in my air-cooled days was "Poor-Mans Posi" Its not a complete lock-up what I can remember. Gene Berg Enterprises makes & sells them. Matt, call them they can answer any question or give you advance on what your trying to build. They are BADASS!

Sadly the Poor-Mans Posi is only for swingaxle cars. Mine is IRS.
Looking like my only option is a Thing LSD swap (T4 w/ factory LSD) or the Quaife unit. I'll probabyl go ahead witht he standard upgrades for the IRS trans like the HD sides and such.Matt W.

Did the baja's or anything come with a locker or LSD? It seems like there would be a factory option somewhere in a junk yard.M. Cholewa
Because they heard I liked my name, so they put my name as my name so I could have my name in my name... all the time.

Awesome links! Thank you. I wonder if the washer trick would work with a standard diff (2 spider gears)? Also ... is it really that simple? Just preload the spider gears?
The Phantom Grip is a much more affordable solution to the Quaife.
On a related not though ... while in GA going over the 2 transaxles I had, we called the local VW guy and he happened to have a Thing trans. Not sure if it's the open diff or LSD one yet, but I'm picking it up for $25 because it's falling out of R. Can't beat that, especially if it's an AW version.Matt W.

Bajas are custom built from OE stuff. They have the same options I do basically.Originally posted by Cholewa View PostDid the baja's or anything come with a locker or LSD? It seems like there would be a factory option somewhere in a junk yard.Matt W.

Yeah, the concept is pretty much exactly the same, just 180º around. Pretty sure the Subaru stuff is beefier. Sadly, OE VW offerings can be fragile.Matt W.

New here. Looking outside of Louisiana for any upcoming rallyX events. I'm in the exact same boat with my '73 super, deciding next to do some sort of limited slip. The diffs. are the same if you happen to get your hands on an AW box or just the IRS ZF Type 1 diff. it will work with any year Type 1 IRS '69-79 (ignore the part on the Phantom Grip that says '69-72 only--it's not true). Swing-axle ZF diffs. and Vanagon IRS are different than Type 1 IRS though. I've seen these IRS ZFs listed for $800 and up just for the diff. and this is pretty ridiculous. Guys think they're gold or something and they're not. It's a 30+ year old 40% locker in questionable shape with no serviceable parts nowadays, well you might as well go ahead and spend $1400 on a new TBD (Quaife).
I'm most likely going to go with a Phantom Grip,
Not as good as a ZF or a Quaife but that's all the budget I have to throw at this car for now for the trans. I have a 002 bus box (3-rib) and Berg intermediate housing for sale if you ever want to go that route and need a beefier trans. Not sure if this would bump you into a different class ('73-74 SSC are very strong Type 1 boxes, '75 and up are the strongest).
