  • Checklist for a newbie

    Hi everyone,

I am a newbie, and this is my first post.

I'm interested in getting started down the path of the darkside...road course racing. I have scoured the internet for information how to do this but I'm still having trouble nailing down exactly what I need to do. I'm getting confused between the requirements for PDX and TT. Maybe some of the members here can help me complete my checklist. I'll list what I know so far:

    1. Valid Drivers License. Check
    2. Join the SCCA. Check
    3. Obtain TT novice form, PE form, & rulebook.Check
    4. Obtain approved helmet (I'm looking at SA2010).
    5. Register for PDX (2 day?) at TGPR April 13-14.
    6. Show up.

I would like to become eligible to run the TT at Barber on 8/31, but I'm not clear on the correct path to take. Can I register for PDX AND get a sign off on my TT novice form in April? Are TT school and PDX two separate events? This is where I'm confused. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

In order to be able to drive in the TT at Barber you will need to attend the TT School at TGPR in April. There will not be a PDX at Barber. To help get you started, you'll need driver safety gear as well as car safety gear.

Driver: SA rated helmet, Nomex driver suit, Nomex underwear, Nomex gloves, Nomex socks, and Nomex shoes or leather shoes (must cover your ankle).

Car: 4 point roll bar, 5 point harness, driver side window net or arm-restraints, fire bottle, and the car must be tech inspected for a log book.

That should help you on your way and give you a good start.

Actually, both of these links are exactly what I was looking for. It really cleared up the distinction between PDX and TT. My car, although not DD, is a street car and lacks ALL of the vehicle safety gear requirements for TT. I am not willing to install a 4pt bar, yet. Looks like PDX is the event I'm leaning towards. Thank you.
