  • 2018 Barber Club Race Aug 25-26 2018

The Alabama Region and the Tennessee Valley Region do this annual race in order to provide for our membership an opportunity to race at a world class venue. As such we need the support of the membership to step up and volunteer your support for the club. We are in need of flagging and communications volunteers (corner workers) to cover the 17 corner stations around Barber Motorsports Park.

The cost to put on an event at Barber Motorsports Park is significant so we need entrants for the Time Trial event as well as the Road Races. This year we will have Time Trial sessions broken down to Open Passing, Open Passing Open Wheel and Restricted Passing. We want give every TT driver the opportunity to enjoy this facility.

Sign up and help support the club with your time. Your support can provide some safety and security for the drivers and a great view of some close racing for you.
We need a head count for corner workers. Sign up today!

    Thanks!

Not cost effective for the 4 drivers that would use it. Register in the TT group and use that for practice/testing.

We haven't had a test day in many years. We don't have the worker base or the bank roll to afford a third day at Barber. Unless of course you want to sponsor it and cover the expense?

We use the Time trial sessions for those driver who want to have practice sessions. I wish we could afford to do a real test day. But we aren't there yet.

Oh, I think people would use it. We just don't have the financial or physical resources
          to put it on.

We need volunteers to help put on races. Flagging and Communications (Work corners), Tech, Registrars, Timing and Scoring, Grid. The list goes on.

The other main reason for no Friday Test Day at Barber is that Porsche has the track rented and will not release it to anybody. But then they have the track rented almost every M-F. Zoom Management has no control over the Porsche rentals and can only deal with the leftover dates. The Porsche people are the reason we cannot even get on the premises until late in the day even though we would not be interrupting their business. Oh yeah, they also refuse to move their cars off of the pavement that we, by contract, have rented and Zoom cannot make them do it.

Cost for the Friday would be about $24-27K after you figure track rental, sanction, insurance, contract F&C, SCCA worker payments, etc. If you estimated the test day entries at the average number of road racers we have had enter the Saturday TT for the last 5 years, the entry cost to break even would be $450-510. I do not forsee many Road Racers signing up for that sort of cost. We have had the TT cost at half that.

But since we cannot schedule the Friday, this is a moot point.

WRL is doing a half-day test day (open to anyone) Friday before their race the week before if you want a test day. It's open track from 1-5 for $450.

A bit pricey... But it is four hours of open track.

If you are planning on helping work a corner at the upcoming Barber Club race please register before August 10. We need to have a head count on workers so we can prepare enough lunches and find out how many FBF workers we need to hire to cover all stations. Don't be shy! Sign up today and help OUR club put on one of the best race weekends in the SE Division of SCCA.

                        John,
When are us Saturday workers going to get instructions on when and where to park and sign in? I can confidently guess on two of those, but don't know what time.
                        Thanks,

Workers are to park their vehicles at the uppermost paddock parking. In years past they also have the tram pickup workers there. I think that the worker meeting will also be up there.
