  • Car classification

Ok, not sure if I have time to finish my car build and test it prior to the Barber race but who knows maybe everything will go as planned. In the meantime, I'm trying to determine where my car would be classed.

1987 Porsche 9442 with an LS1 engine (5.7L). Lots of mods, but no tube framing. Any clues?

Sounds like SPO to me...does it have a fuel cell? Because in STO you have to have a fuel cell I believe. Also, do you have a log book for the car? Getting one at the race is possible but you will need to arrange that ahead of time.

    Sounds like a helluva car!

Weren't you the guy that used to have a Spec Miata?

Tim, I would review the rules for any class and ask this question since you have a car with some interesting mods. The SPO rules are here http://www.sedivracing.org/2011SEDiv...ClassRules.pdf
But if I am not mistaken it was written as a catch all for cars running in other clubs and series that have rules written for them (and the car abides by them). Was the car made for someother clubs (such as NASA) class?

Another possibility is SP (Super Production) which is first mentioned in the GCR in Section 9.1.c.2a - the rules seem to point towards the car meeting the safety requirements listed in GT and Prod car rules.
One other option is ITO, but again the ITO rules are based on a DOT tired car that meets another series (or road racing clubs) rules.

Yes, the car has current logbooks for both NASA and PBOC. I thought that SPO would work but that requires a fuel cell and I still use the original Porsche tank. I spoke to Richard in Huntsville and he did not have an answer off the top of his head as to where it could go. I'm not interested in points, just want to race next weekend.

The car, with new V8 engine was built to race in the NASA ST2 class. Most of that class is made up of corvettes and they run in the SCCA STO class. I'm hoping that I can sneak into that group even though my car is not listed, afterall, I'll waive points as this is the only SCCA race I will do this year.

No, I have never owned a spec miata. Have always run a front-engined porsche on the track.

Are you running DOT Hoosiers? then maybe ITO - I'm sure they'll find something ....see you at Barber.

I'm in. SPO. SE Div has a rule that they will accept other cars as long as they meet the requirements of their sanctioning body Now I just need to get the car finished and hope the the test and tune on Friday goes well.

Just so you know, there is and will be some serious hardware there in SPO this year. Should be exciting for ya! We're glad that you'll be making the event. I'll have to stop by and visit ya. I'll be riding around on a golf cart in the pits helping to make it all happen.

I'm there to have fun, not expecting to win SPO as the car was not built for that class. Of course, if it rains, my attitude on wining might as well

EDIT: just checked, there is no one signed up for SPO, now I have a chance for sure!

Hmmm...I wonder where everyone went? You should be able to mix it up with all of the Vette's that will be there. Except for that Mayer guy. He's kind of a big deal in Corvette racing these days...lol.

I don't see Bob's name on the list. He may be heading to Texas for the NARRA race.
